Our Services

New American Scholars is committed to bridging the educational gap for refugee students in New Hampshire by offering a range of targeted academic programs in reading, writing, Language Arts, math, and science. Our multifaceted approach extends beyond classroom learning; we work closely with schools and educators to provide a comprehensive out-of-school support system. Through academic assistance, social support, and peer mentorship, we empower refugee students to successfully transition into their school communities and take agency of their learning and lives. Our mission is to foster both academic and personal growth, setting the foundation for lifelong success.


As a Student

Receive customized educational content designed to supplement classroom coursework. You will gain confidence, learn study skills, and develop strategies to overcome the challenges encountered at school. Your caring tutor will provide you with support that is not just related to school assignments, but your general well-being as well.

New American Scholars (NAS) proudly offers several programs: 

 NAS (intensive)

Provides a concentrated and focused approach to learning a specific subject or skill. The program is designed to provide students with targeted, individualized instruction to help them make significant progress in a short period of time. The NAS(intensive) program typical involves more hours of instruction per week and is dsigned to be more intensive and rigorous. This program takes place over several weeks or months, depending on the subject matter and the student’s goals. This is the ideal program for students who  are struggling with a particular subject or skill to catch up and improve their performance. Subjects include math, reading, writing and English. Students receive one-on-one instruction, personalized lesson plans and regular assessments to track progress and make adjustments as needed.

 NAS (small group)

Provides educational tutoring to small groups of students, typically 2-6 students, in a specific subject or skill. The program is designed to provided personalized attention and support to each student, allowing them to learn and progress at their own pace. The program may focus on a specific subject area such as math, science or English, or it may offer more general academic support. The lessions often include interactive activities and exercises, group discussions and personalized feedback from the tutor. Small group tutoring can take place in a variety of settings and is offered in communities throughout New Hampshire, including Concord, Manchester, Nashua and the Seacoast.

 The “Study-Buddy” Program

A Study-Buddy is a tutor who is partnered with a student to help with homework, school projects, review course materials, prepare for exams and reinforce the student’s understanding of a subject. The main goal of having a Study-Buddy is to create a supportive learning environment to keep the student motivated and on track. Study-Buddies uses a secure online learning platform where tutor & student meet 1-3 times/week.. Having a Study-Buddy can be a great way to enhance the learning experience, boost academic performance and feel supported outside of school.

 The NAS Reading & Writing Program

An in-person program that is held in the evenings throughout the school year for children ages 5-18. The NAS Reading & Writing program is an educational initiative that aims to provide literacy skills and promote language development for refugees students. This program provides essential support for refugee learners in their journey towards self-sufficiency and intergrate into their new school communities. 

Science Explorers

Learning science is about more than just acquiring knowledge; it's about building skills for understanding the world. For refugee children, who often face barriers to education and enrichment opportunities, Our science program serves as a bridge towards improved academic performance and broadened future prospects. Science Explorers is an enriching educational experience specifically tailored for refugee children between the ages of 5 and 18. The program features workshops that delve into various scientific disciplines, encouraging hands-on learning and practical experimentation. The program seeks to ignite a passion for scientific inquiry and equips these young learners with fundamental knowledge in scientific concepts, thereby aiding their overall cognitive development and critical thinking abilities.

Adaptive Learning Technology

We are excited to harness Adaptive Learning Technology in all of our programs! Adaptive learning technology is a type of educational technology that uses data and analytics to personalize learning experiences for individual learners. This technology is particularly useful for refugee learners, who come from diverse backgrounds and have varying levels of educational and linguistic proficiency. Our Adaptive platform provides instruction in language arts, math, science and English. Adaptive learning technology is a powerful tool for refugee learners. It helps identify gaps in their learning and where additional focus is needed. Best of all, it provides real-time feedback to the student’s parents, teachers and schools. 


As a Tutor

As a tutor, you will provide academic assistance and social support to refugee students to help them transition into their school communities and become self-advocates for their education.

 

In addition,

  • You will gain leadership experience and hone your communication skills while helping students become independent learners.
  • You will share your relatable experiences and lessons-learned to help students build self-confidence.

  • You will help students explore ways in and out of school — through clubs or community programs and projects — to build and/or expand personal interests and passions.
