A Private Meeting at Phoenix Hall, Concord, NH 

The weekend was marked by an exceptional event as Riyah was invited for a private meeting with Governor Christie and his wife, Mary Pat Christie, at the historic Phoenix Hall in Concord, NH. This was not just an honor but a testament to the impact of New American Scholars on the educational landscape.  

The Core of the Discussion: Challenges and Solutions 

Riyah shared the founding story of our organization, eloquently highlighting the myriad challenges refugee children face in the U.S. education system. She underscored the critical need for tailored support to help these students overcome educational disruptions and bridge gaps in their learning journey. 

Key issues discussed included:

• Teacher and Paraprofessional Shortages: Particularly in ESL, a crucial area for refugee students.

• Grade placement by Age vs. Competency: The systemic challenge in the U.S. education system that often overlooks the unique needs of refugee children

• Preparation for the Workforce:The dire need for refugee youth to achieve basic proficiency in reading, writing, and math to pursue higher education and meaningful employment opportunities

• The Digital Divide: Highlighting the significant disadvantage faced by refugee families lacking internet and computer access.
